What is a Homoeopathic Elixer?
“Homoeopathy is based on the practice of a substance being used as a medicine that is like the disease that needs to be cured. The founder of homoeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann, called this the theory of “like cures like.” He discovered the theory of homoeopathy by testing Cinchona officinalis. Cinchona officinalis comes from what is commonly known as the quinine tree because its main product or ingredient is quinine. Herbalists had previously considered Cinchona officinalis to be an excellent medicine for feverish states because it provided relief from fever by promoting gentle perspiration. Because Hahnemann was a leading eighteenth-century German chemist and physician he was already familiar with the clinical use of quinine as a treatment for malaria. Hahnemann experimented by ingesting small amounts of quinine bark and discovered that the crude substance produced the same symptoms as the disease malaria. To reduce the toxicity of the crude substance, quinine, Hahnemann experimented with diluting a tincture of Cinchona officinalis.
Hahnemann discovered by diluting Cinchona officinalis, he was able to reduce the toxicity of the crude or raw substance quinine bark. He also found when he diluted and had vigorously shaken the dilution, known as potentizing, he was able to increase the effectiveness or potency of the solution as a medicine. It was this process of both diluting and potentizing that enabled him to discover that the effects grew stronger the more he diluted and potentized the substance. The process of infinitely diluting and potentizing medicines has always been criticized by the scientific world. Homoeopathic remedies are diluted and potentized by taking one drop of a solution and adding that one drop to 99 drops of water ad infinitum; up to 6, or 30, or 200, or even a million dilutions. From a conventional chemist’s point of view, a dilution past 12, known as “Avogadro’s number,” or the point of infinity, would have none of the original solution left in the substance. For example, this means that when chemists examine the homoeopathic dilution of Arsenicum, derived from the poison arsenic, they will find no trace of the original poison arsenic. Homoeopathic remedies are diluted beyond the point of containing any of the original source or substance—for arsenic, then, the important aspect of dilution is when a homoeopathic remedy is made from arsenic, it is no longer arsenic.
The magazine New Scientist[i] recently reported an amazing discovery in support of the original findings of Hahnemann and the experience of homoeopaths for centuries. The article is based on the findings of two Korean chemists who discovered in the process of diluting solutions in water that the molecules behaved the opposite to the belief systems that conventional chemistry has always had. Dissolved molecules are assumed to spread farther apart in the dilution process. The two chemists discovered that they do the opposite. Because the molecules do in fact clump together, it throws light on the belief that homoeopaths have always had that the water has a memory of the original substance and the solution does indeed become more potent the higher the dilution is. This book is not intended to prove the foundation of homoeopathy; rather, it is enough to note that new scientific and medical discoveries are always being made, and skeptics who have easily dismissed homoeopathy on the basis that the remedy dilutions are too extreme to have any effect or potency as a medicine must now confront their own skepticism.
The remedy prescribed in a homoeopathic consultation is one that matches, or is most “like,” the mental and emotional characteristics, as well as the physical characteristics, of the patient. All the symptoms that a patient describes in a homoeopathic consultation are cross-checked and confirmed in a homoeopathic book known as the repertory. A repertory has been compiled from what is referred to in homoeopathy as provings. The first proving was when Hahnemann discovered that Cinchona officinalis as a diluted substance produced symptoms in a healthy person that matched the disease malaria. The repertory contains case notes and observations of hundreds of homoeopaths over two centuries of practice. Homoeopaths believe that the effect of the homoeopathic remedy mirrors the effect of a crude overdosing or poisoning. Because it is important to understand the crude substances that are used for homoeopathic medicines, the repertory also contains extensive clinical toxicological reports that can be used for reference material on toxicology. The process of adding to the repertory is an ongoing study based on clinical observations of provings by homoeopaths of today.
The most simple of dilutions in my practice that confirm the theory of “like cures like” is the homoeopathic use of the remedy Allium cepa, a dilution of red onion. This is a common homoeopathic medicine used for the symptoms of hay fever and runny eyes caused by various allergic reactions. The effects of cutting an onion are most like the symptoms of the hay fever sufferer. I prescribe the homoeopathic remedy Allium cepa on the basis of matching the symptoms to the effect of cutting an onion in a healthy person. This is an example of a simple case of a proving. The provings of homoeopathic medicines are based on historical recordings that prove efficacy—in this case, if onion cutting causes the eyes to water in a healthy person, as a diluted and potentized substance it will cure the unhealthy person of the same watery eyes. It is easy to understand this process as being similar in theory, although it is dissimilar in practice, to the effects or process involved in conventional allopathic vaccination. It is the diluting and potentizing of substances that distinguishes homoeopathy from the conventional medical application and effects of allopathic vaccination.
The original substances that homoeopathic remedies were made from were varied. Remedies were made from plants, minerals, animals, chemicals, and even diseased tissues. In the constitutional summaries section of this book, the description of each constitutional type begins with the origins of the remedy. This section is very interesting and important to read because it will give you an understanding of the substance the homoeopathic remedy is derived from. In homoeopathy there are single use elixers traditionally prescribed by ‘Constitutional’ homoeopaths, and complexes. Complexes are traditionally used in many European countries. Complexes are a specific range of elixers which are selected on the basis that firstly they are compatible with each other, and secondly on the basis of having a symbiosis, or theme. The advantage of having a symbiotic relationship to each other means that the elixers can target several layers within a specific area.
For example, in the formula ‘Accepted’ the self-effacing nature of Lac-equinum which allows them to feel trapped by their harsh judgement of themselves is aided by the elixer Calcarea sulphuricum who perceive misfortune. Furthermore, adding Natrum sulphuricum who suffer obstructionist resistance to self-acceptance and love, completes a powerful trio of remedies targeting self-acceptance.

The elixer colours and the chakras.
As you can notice each of the elixer labels have different colour.
Each colour relates to a specific area that is called chakra. What is a chakra you may ask?
The word Chakra means in Sanskrit: ‘Wheel of spinning energy’. The aim is to Reconnect to your internal wheel of life.
Within our bodies there are seven major energy centres. Each one of the colours relates to different part in the body. Taking the elixer will aim to balance that chakra.
Sharon Tal has created a crystal chakra kit that is aimed to balance the energy field by placing specific crystals on the body and/ or holding them in your hand for strengthening of the chakras.
The chakras are located within the body in front of the spinal column and are aligned vertically up & down the spine.
The Base (root chakra): Its colour is red and is located at the base of the spine. It’s the chakra closest to earth and represents earthly energies, grounding, and is associated with the Feet, Legs, Bones, Large Intestine, Spine and the Nervous System.
The Sacral (naval chakra): Its colour is orange and is located between the base of the spine and the navel. It represents sexuality, creativity, motivation, and the urge to do things in your life. It’s associated with the Skin, Kidneys, Bladder, Lymphatic System, Circulatory System, Adrenal Glands and Reproductive Organs.
The Solar Plexus: Its colour is yellow and is located in the stomach area, a few inches above the navel. Primal emotions are carried in this chakra like anger; resentment and frustration. Solar Plexus traits include personal power. It is the seat of your emotional being. It’s associated with the Stomach, Diaphragm, Gall Bladder, Liver and Pancreas.
The heart: Its colour is pink and green and is located in the centre of the chest. It is the centre of love and healing, harmony and peace. It is through this chakra that we fall in love, then that emotion moves to the emotional centre, the solar plexus, then to the sexual chakras for strong feelings of attractions, then to the base, which promotes feelings of wanting to settle down. It’s associated with the Thymus Gland, and the Heart.
The Throat: Its colour is blue and is located within the throat. It is the chakra of communication, expression and judgment. Should you experience problems with your throat, it is sometimes said that if you draw the colour blue to this area it will help you say what needs to be said. It is associated with the Vocal Cords, Ears, Nervous System as well as the Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands.
